Educational assessment at Rimaskóli

Rimaskóli has been implementing formative learning recently. This learning culture focuses on student learning rather than teacher instruction.

Collaboration and discussions

The student group is a learning community with a strong emphasis on collaboration, discussions about learning, and student responsibility. Student groups are mixed-ability, and work is based on students' prior knowledge. All students can improve their learning. Clear learning objectives and understanding of good performance make learning more focused, enjoyable, and easier.

Feedback

Well-considered and regular feedback is key. Feedback is only meaningful if students can use it to improve. Assessment aims to identify where students are in relation to defined goals and determine needed support for improvement.

The focus is on a growth mindset and expectations of success. Students are aware of when and how learning occurs. Perseverance is considered more fortunate than intelligence, and mistakes create learning opportunities.

Formative assessment is provided consistently in all classes to support students toward their goals. Summative assessment is final, assuming students won't have opportunities to improve in that area.

All school activities are based on the focus of the national primary school curriculum and Reykjavík City's Education Policy.
