Chess masters at Rimaskóli keep growing
There's no slowing down at Rimaskóli with new chess masters constantly joining the group. This showed clearly at the Christmas Chess Tournament of Reykjavík's Sports & Leisure Council, held in partnership with the Reykjavík Chess Association on Dec. 14. Rimaskóli's chess teams all placed in the top positions, with great depth in the teams and no weak links to be found.
Each chess team consists of 4 students plus substitutes. Competition takes place in three age groups and Rimaskóli sent two chess teams to each group. Awards were given for the top three places and also for the best B team. It's exciting to report that Rimaskóli clearly won both divisions at the elementary level and also had the strongest B teams.
At the middle school level, the undefeated Rimaskóli girls took second place in the tournament behind the Réttarholtsskóli chess team, with these two schools clearly having the strongest chess teams.
Rimaskóli's chess instructor is Björn Ívar Karlsson, principal of the Iceland Chess School, and the supervisor of the school's chess program is Helgi Árnason, former principal
